As a wife and mom, I’m always looking for ways to get fresh, healthy food for an amazing bargain. It’s not always easy – especially with rising grocery costs.
Since I’ve always been a penny pincher, I’ve been keeping track of the price of food for years, and I’m usually shocked whenever I see how much menu staples rise in price. (Hello, dairy! The cost of butter and cheese have skyrocketed in recent years! It’s enough to make me want to buy my own cow, just to raise it for my family’s love of dairy products. But I digress.)
I’m sure it’s always been like this, but it is hard to feed a family nutritious, fresh food while on a budget. Not impossible – but definitely difficult.
I’ve tracked down markets where I can find discounted fresh produce. I know the stores to head to when I’m shopping for dairy. But meat? It can be tough to find good bargains. As much as I try to stretch my family’s menu, I can only sneak in so many meatless meals before I start getting complaints.
While I’ve found my favorite local butcher (fresh, grassfed meat at reasonable prices!), I’m not a completely loyal customer. I will buy meat other places if I am pleased with both the quality and price.
For the past few years, friends across the country have been raving about Zaycon Fresh on Facebook. I always wanted to try it, but never knew exactly what it was – and always seemed to forget about it.
What a mistake on my part.
Finally this winter, I decided to try Zaycon Fresh – I’d place just one order, see what the process was like, try the meat, and make my decision.
I’m so glad I did, because it’s an utterly fantastic way to stock up on meat.
What is Zaycon Fresh?
Started in 2009, Zaycon Fresh brings fresh meat direct to consumers at wholesale prices, eliminating the added cost of the middlemen.
Zaycon Fresh brings products direct from the farm or processor (or as nearly as direct as possible). Prices are lower, because Zaycon negotiates savings through the buying power of many families buying together.
All fresh meat sold by Zaycon Fresh is sold by the case – so if you’re placing an order for chicken breasts, know that you’ll have a LOT of chicken breasts.
Plus, because you’re ordering a case of fresh meat, plan on taking some time to portion and pack it up for the freezer – or, host an exceptionally large barbecue!
Most of the fresh meat sold by Zaycon include beef, chicken, pork, and seafood (fish and shrimp).
Currently, Zaycon Fresh delivers food to more than 1,200 locations around the U.S. On their website, you can type in your zip code to find the closest delivery spot.
What’s the Zaycon process?
Once you visit Zaycon Fresh’s website, find either the kind of meat you’d like to order, or your location. (With the location option, you’ll be able to see what food will be delivered nearby.)
Place and pay for your order online, add the delivery date and time to your calendar, and wait. (Typically, you can place orders a few months ahead of time.)
On the delivery day, drive to the pick-up location at the specified time. (Don’t be late!) You’ll wait in a short line in your vehicle, drive up to the large, refrigerated Zaycon Fresh truck, and workers will put the cases of fresh meat in your vehicle.
That’s it. (Well, almost. Then you can drive home, divide your case of meat and refrigerate and freeze it to your heart’s content.)
My Zaycon experience
This winter, I placed my first order with Zaycon Fresh – 40 pounds of boneless, skinless chicken breasts for $1.69 a pound. (Amazing!)
When the delivery day finally came, I drove to the pick-up location, waited in line and quickly got my box of chicken. When I brought it home, I couldn’t wait to take a peek – the box was FILLED with chicken breasts. And the breasts were HUGE. While Zaycon Fresh doesn’t sell organic meat, they do buy fresh chicken from farmers who breed larger chickens.
Just one Zaycon Fresh chicken breast fills an entire cast iron frying pan – and it feeds my family of four for dinner, with more chicken left over for the next day’s lunch. It’s a lot of meat.
Ideally, I’d like to start stocking up on all of Zaycon’s selections, so my chest freezer could be stocked with steaks, ground beef, chicken, and fish. I haven’t got to that point yet. But I did love my Zaycon experience and can’t wait to order more fresh meat.
